Uwe Sauer is a trained microbiologist who earned his PhD from the University of Göttingen in 1993. Since 2006, he has served as a professor of systems biology at ETH Zurich, where he focuses on fundamental questions related to microbial metabolism. His laboratory merges modeling with quantitative experimentation, particularly employing mass spectrometry-based techniques for 13C-flux analysis and high-throughput metabolomics. His research aims to identify and quantify key regulation mechanisms that coordinate microbial metabolism, with a specific emphasis on metabolite-protein interactions. Additonally, his laboratory investigates metabolic interactions within communities of microbes in mammalian intestines and marine environments.
