Sebastian obtained his Ph.D. at the BioImaging Center, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany, in 2003 on neuronal outgrowth. Next, he became a Product Manager for Till Photonics in Germany (2003/04), working on imaging systems. Consequently, Sebastian moved to the Medical University Innsbruck, Austria (2004/06) for a postdoc position on neuronal regeneration. 

In 2007, he moved to Belgium and started to work for the VIB on imaging infrastructure. 

His current assignment is Innovation Technologist. In addition, Sebastian was appointed as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine in the KU Leuven Neuroscience Department in October 2015.

Currently, he is spokesperson for Flanders BioImaging and Chair of the Panel of Nodes in Euro-BioImaging
