Mathieu JM Bertrand is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Molecular Biology at Ghent University and a Principal Investigator at VIB (Flanders Institute for Biotechnology). He leads an internationally recognized research program focusing on how immune and death signalling pathways are controlled at the biochemical and cellular levels. His work focuses on molecular checkpoints controlling survival or programmed cell death, including apoptosis and necroptosis, and their role in inflammation. Key themes include TNF receptor signalling, RIPK1 regulation, post-translational modifications, NF-κB/MAPK pathways, and unconventional autophagy. By integrating genetic, biochemical, and disease models, his research provides mechanistic insights into inflammatory, autoimmune, and degenerative disorders and identifies potential therapeutic targets.
