Zweckstetter
Markus Zweckstetter is Professor at the University Medical Center Göttingen and head of the research group “Translational Structural Biology” at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE). He also serves as founder and CEO of brainQr Therapeutics GmbH, a DZNE spin-off launched in 2024 to develop conformation-selective small molecules for tauopathies. His academic background combines physics (LMU Munich), biochemistry (PhD, MPI for Biochemistry), and structural biology (postdoctoral training at NIH). Over the past two decades, he has pioneered NMR-based methods to investigate intrinsically disordered proteins, biomolecular condensates, and membrane proteins involved in neurodegeneration. His team was among the first to show that disease-relevant posttranslational modifications drive tau into Alzheimer’s-like filaments. They resolved the structure of the full-length soluble tau monomer and the fuzzy coat of tau filaments, and demonstrated how LLPS contributes to tau aggregation. As brainQr CEO, he translated these insights into a first-in-class tau-stabilizing compound, and established an AI platform to target IDPs. He has published >300 peer-reviewed articles, holds five patents, and led two ERC Advanced grants. His goal is to bridge biophysics and therapeutic development to halt tau-driven neurodegeneration.
