Malte
Kühnemund
Malte Kühnemund is a leading entrepreneur and pioneer in spatial biology, based in Stockholm, Sweden, with a proven track record in translating scientific innovation into commercial products.
He is the CEO and co-founder of CubaseBio, a new spatial biology company pioneering 3D spatial transcriptomics based on DNA microscopy, utilizing DNA sequencing and 3D computational reconstruction for millimeter thick tissue samples.
Previously, Malte cofounded CARTANA in 2017, a SciLifeLab and Karolinska Institute spin-off that pioneered in situ sequencing and was first to commercialize a mid-plex (hundreds of genes) in situ analysis technology for the global research community. CARTANA was acquired by 10x Genomics in August 2020. Following acquisition, Malte served as R&D Director at 10x Genomics and co-directed the 10x Genomics Sweden RnD site, leading transatlantic research teams, contributing significantly to development and launch of the Xenium platform, and adding new assay capabilities to both Xenium and Visium platforms.
Malte also co-founded and serves as chairman of the board at Haga Bioscience, an RNA in situ biomarker translation platform company. He also co-founded Countagen, a gene editing analysis company that commercializes results of his PhD research.
Malte earned his PhD in Molecular Medicine from Uppsala University and Scilifelab in the labs of Mats Nilsson and Ulf Landegren. His work on single molecule analysis and sequencing technologies became a key part of the CARTANA technology portfolio.
