Dr. Ingrid Carvacho is a biochemist with a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology. She completed her PhD training under the supervision of Dr. Ramón Latorre, Centro de Estudios Científicos, CECS, Chile, focusing on potassium (K⁺) channels. Following her PhD, Dr. Carvacho pursued a postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. David Clapham at Boston Children’s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. During her postdoc, she initially investigated the conduction mechanisms in Hv1 channels and later, transitioned to exploring the role of ion channels, particularly TRP channels, in fertilization. In 2014, Dr. Carvacho moved to Aarhus University in Denmark for further training in reproductive biology, supported by the Carlsberg Foundation fellowship. In 2017, she returned to Chile to join the Faculty of Basic Sciences at Universidad Católica del Maule (UCM) as an Assistant Professor. Between 2020 and 2022, she was Director of Research at UCM, before transitioning to the Faculty of Medicine (2022), where she now is Associate Professor. Dr. Carvacho leads the Laboratory of Ion Channels and Reproduction as Principal Investigator. Her research employs animal models, cellular biology, biochemistry, and electrophysiological techniques to investigate ion channel expression and function in mouse oocytes and eggs. Her studies focus on understanding their roles in oocyte maturation, activation, and early embryonic development. Dr. Carvacho mentors undergraduate and graduate students, fostering their growth as young scientists. Her laboratory is funded by the Chilean National Agency of Research and Development (ANID; FONDECYT 1221308 and FOVI 230192).
