Felipe Opazo is a neuroscientist, biochemist, and molecular biotechnologist whose research links advanced microscopy, neurodegeneration, and molecular probe engineering. He earned his BSc and MSc from the Universidad de Chile, where he studied kinase inhibitors relevant to Alzheimer’s disease, using different biochemical assays and computational modeling at EMBL Heidelberg. He completed his PhD in Neurosciences in 2008 at the International Max Planck Research School, focusing on dopamine transporters and alpha-synuclein aggregation in Parkinson’s disease using electrophysiology and various imaging strategies. Fascinated by the emerging field of super-resolution microscopy, Dr. Opazo pursued postdoctoral research, contributing to the understanding of molecular synaptic physiology using many of the initial techniques in super-resolution microscopy. Recognizing the importance of sample labeling precision and reproducibility, he began developing tailored probes, especially nanobodies, for advanced imaging applications. Since 2016, he has led his own lab at the University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany, dedicated to creating new molecular probes for neuroscience and microscopy. He teaches neurophysiology in the Göttingen Medical School and serves as an examiner for state medical exams for more than 10 years. In 2022, he earned his Habilitation in Physiology. Dr. Opazo also founded NanoTag Biotechnologies GmbH in 2015, transforming academic probe development into commercial tools for basic research, diagnostics, and therapeutics. He is the primary inventor on five patents. He has authored various book chapters and published over 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
