Ben Schumann studied Biochemistry in Tübingen and performed his doctoral work on synthetic carbohydrate vaccines against pathogenic bacteria with Peter H. Seeberger at the MPI Potsdam and Freie Universität Berlin. His work was recognised with the Otto Hahn Medal and the Prize for Excellence in Glycosciences. He moved to Stanford as a Humboldt Foundation Feodor Lynen postdoctoral Fellow to develop and apply chemical glycobiology tools with Carolyn R. Bertozzi. In 2018, he started his independent career as a Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute and a Lecturer at Imperial College London. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2022 and in this time, became an EMBO Young Investigator and was part of the team "Glycotrackers" that received the RSC Chemical Biology Horizon Award. He has received an ERC Starting Grant covered by UK Research and Innovation as well as the RSC Dextra Carbohydrate Chemistry Award (2023), the Biochemical Society Early Career Award (2024) and the RSC Norman Heatley Award (2024). In 2025, he moved to TUD Dresden University of Technology as a Full Professor of Biochemistry. His lab aims to harness the awesome power of chemical "Precision Tools" to understand glycan biosynthesis in health and disease.
