Arn van den Maagdenberg is full professor and since 2011 holds a Chair in Functional and Molecular Neurogenetics at the Leiden University Medical Centre in Leiden, the Netherlands with affiliations at both the Departments of Human Genetics and Neurology. He is a neurogeneticist and neurobiologist working in Leiden since 1998. He studied biology at the University of Nijmegen and received his PhD in 1993 at Leiden University for which he investigated cardiovascular disease in patients and transgenic mice with specific mutations in apolipoprotein E. In the last two decades he mainly investigated migraine. His current genetic research involves the identification of gene mutations for various neurological diseases that include familial hemiplegic migraine and alternating hemiplegia of childhood. He has also been active in the identification of many gene variants (through genome-wide association studies) in migraine and related disorders. His team has generated and/or characterised transgenic mouse models that carry human pathogenic gene mutations affecting the brain. By combining neurobiological tools, including awake electrophysiology, he investigates various aspects of cortical spreading depolarization, headache, and seizures in these mouse models. His research also is aimed to test compounds involving various neurobiological pathways to treat the mentioned diseases. Most relevant to the Trp2025 meeting, his team studies the effects of TRPM3 in a migraine context.
