Andrea Volterra is Honorary Professor at University of Lausanne and Visiting Faculty at Wyss Center, Geneva. He obtained >30 grants as PI, including the ERC Advanced, and is author of 130 publications with ~15000 citations. He won the Theodore Ott prize from Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (2017).

Andrea Volterra is a pioneer and leader of the field of astrocyte-neuron communication in physiology and disease. His studies led to discover and characterize the modulatory role of astrocytes in synaptic functions and showed that perturbation of the astrocyte input causes synapse alteration, neuronal damage and behavioural impairments, supporting the idea that normal brain computations and degenerative processes involve neuron-glia interactions.

Andrea Volterra is now engaged in decoding the role of astrocytes in memory function and dysfunction, and in developing innovative astrocyte-targeted therapeutics for the cure of neuropsychiatric conditions.
