Johan Vande Voorde is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow and an Associate Group Leader at the CRUK Scotland Institute (CRUK SI). His laboratory focuses on metabolic crosstalk between the host and tumours, ultimately aiming to develop new, more efficient therapies. He has a particular interest in systemic metabolic alterations in colorectal cancer (CRC), and in the metabolic effects of gut microbiota.

He obtained his PhD from KU Leuven (Balzarini Lab) for his work on the metabolic implications of tumour-associated bacteria on chemotherapy efficacy. In 2015, he joined Eyal Gottlieb’s lab (CRUK SI) where he focused on metabolic vulnerabilities of CRC, and contributed to the development of Plasmax, the first commercially available physiological cell culture medium. He joined Owen Sansom’s lab (CRUK SI) in 2018 as part of CRUK Grand Challenge Team Rosetta applying multimodal metabolomics for CRC tissue stratification and target discovery. In 2024, he obtained a CRUK Career Development Fellowship to establish his independent research group at the School of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow.
