Diego
Oyarzún
Diego Oyarzún is Reader in Computational Biology at the University of Edinburgh, where he holds a joint appointment with the School of Informatics and School of Biological Sciences. Originally trained in electrical engineering, he has over 70 research articles and 15 years of experience in computational design of molecular systems, with applications in therapy and the industrial biotechnology sector. His team has developed novel machine learning solutions for early-stage drug discovery, gene circuit design, and genome-scale metabolic modelling. In addition to his research, Diego is Director of several multidisciplinary initiatives, including the £8M Centre for Doctoral Training in Biomedical Artificial Intelligence, the Cross-Disciplinary Fellowship Programme in Quantitative Biomedicine, and the Edinburgh Science for Sustainability Hub. He has had roles with several international bodies (World Economic Forum, G20, OECD) and was Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute on AI and data science. He is currently a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
