Ute Hellmich studied Biochemistry in Frankfurt, Germany where she first became interested in the intricacies of membrane protein structural dynamics. After a PhD investigating the conformational changes in bacterial multidrug transporters using solid-state NMR with Clemens Glaubitz, she moved to Harvard University to study the interplay of TRPV ion channels with lipids in the group of Rachelle Gaudet. In 2015, she became an assistant professor for Membrane Biochemistry in Mainz, Germany. Embracing an integrated structural biology approach, her lab began focusing on the functional roles of intrinsically disordered regions and channelopathy mutants for TRP channel regulation and the role of endolysosomal TRP channels in neglected tropical diseases. Since 2021, Ute is the chair of Biostructural Interactions at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany and a member of the Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse”.
